Effect of green tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) extract on sperm health parameters in adult rats treated with Bisphenol A

Authors

Abstract:

Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) disturbs male reproductive system performance via the production of free radicals. Green tea extract (GTE) is known as a potent antioxidant. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of co-treatment of BPA and GTE as an antioxidant on male reproductive system performance. Methods: Adult male rats were divided into 4 groups: control, Bisphenol A (20 µg/kg/day), GTE (100 mg/kg/day) and Bisphenol A + GTE, treated for 8 weeks. The body weight and left testis weight were recorded. Left caudal epididymis was separated and kept in Ham's F10. Released sperms were used for analyzing the number, motility, viability and abnormalities of the sperm. The quality of sperm chromatin was assessed by nuclear staining acridine orange and aniline blue. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey‘s test. The means were considered significant at P < 0.05. Results: A significant reduction in the number, motility and viability of sperm were seen in BPA group compared to the control group (P < 0.001). BPA didn’t have any effect on sperm DNA integrity and histon-protamine replacement (P > 0.05). Also a considerable increase in sperm viability and motility was seen in the GTE group compared to the control. Conclusion: The results of this investigation showed that GTE could compensate the adverse effects of BPA on sperm parameters in adult rats.

Effect of green tea (Camellia sinensis L.) extract on morphological and functional changes in adult male gonads of albino rats.

Green tea, prepared from the steamed and dried leaves of the shrub Camellia sinensis, is known for its antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic effects. However, its effects on male gonadal functions have not been explored adequately and the present investigation has been undertaken to evaluate the effect of green tea extract on gonads of adult male albino rats. Results of in vivo studies showed that ...

Effect of green tea (camellia sinensis l.) leaf extract on reproductive system of adult male albino rats.

Green tea leaf extract (GTLE), used in this experiment has shown great influence on male reproductive system functionally as well as morphologically. The extract was prepared according to the method of Wei. H. et al. The extract was given to two different experimental animal groups with two different doses during 26 consecutive days. After treatment it was found that, the weight of the testis w...

The Protective Effect of Hydroalcoholic Extract of Green Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) on Anxiety Behaviors Induced with Chronic Noise Stress in Adult Male Wistar Rats

Background: The recruitment of medicinal herbs for the treatment of psychological disorders such as anxiety and stress has a long history. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the compensatory effects of hydroalcoholic extract of green tea on anxiety behaviors that are induced by noise stress in male Wistar rats. Methods: In this study, male Wis...

Hepatoprotective effect of green tea (Camellia sinensis) extract against tamoxifen-induced liver injury in rats.

Tamoxifen citrate (TAM), is widely used for treatment of breast cancer. It showed a degree of hepatic carcinogenesis. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the antioxidant capacity of green tea (Camellia sinensis) extract (GTE) against TAM-induced liver injury. A model of liver injury in female rats was done by intraperitoneal injection of TAM in a dose of 45mg Kg(-1) day(-1), i.p. for 7 s...

Green tea [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] extract reverses the despair behaviour in reserpinised and diabetic mice.

Green tea (C. sinensis) extract (GTE) dose dependently produced reversal of despair in normal, reserpinised and diabetic mice, thereby demonstrating an antidepressant effect. Although the exact mechanism is yet to be explored, the possible inhibition of catechol-o-methyl transferase and monoamine oxidase enzymes may be responsible for antidepressant activity of GTE.

Protective Effect of Green Tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) against Prostate Cancer: From In Vitro Data to Algerian Patients

Green tea (GT) has been studied for its effects as antioxidant and cancer-preventive agent. Epidemiological studies showed that GT consumption decreases the risk for prostate cancer (PC). To investigate whether erythrocyte oxidative stress (OS) is associated with PC and whether daily consumption of GT improves the oxidative phenotype, we performed a study in a group of Algerian PC patients, pre...
